George Town A Unesco World Heritage Site
On 8 July 2008 two historic sites within the Malaysian cities of Melaka and George Town were jointly inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The World Heritage List includes 890 properties forming part of the cultural and natural heritage which the World Heritage Committee considers as having outstanding universal value. Melaka and George Town as historic cities of the Straits of Malacca are part of the 689 cultural sites on the List.
Their outstanding universal value is that both towns present a unique architectural and cultural townscape that is without parallel anywhere in the region. As former trading ports linking the East and West – from Great Britain and Europe through the Middle East, the Indian Subcontinent and the Malay Archipelago to China – they reflect the multi-cultural heritage and tradition of Asia, and European colonial influences. While Melaka today demonstrates influences from the Portuguese and Dutch periods in colonial history, George Town on the other is a remarkable example of a colonial town from the British era in the 18th century.
George Town, in particular, is a reasonably intact colonial port town that boasts the region’s largest ensemble of prewar buildings. It is a showcase of Southern Chinese double-storey shophouses and temple architecture.
The Rice Miller Project is located in the heart of George Town’s core heritage zone.
